A previously unused wall within this private cinema room was transformed into a full-width bespoke library, combining generous open shelving with concealed storage and a handcrafted solid-oak rolling ladder.
Designed specifically around the proportions of the room, the finished piece brings together practical storage and considered detailing to create a feature that feels completely at home within the space.
The Brief
The starting point for this project was a large, unused wall within the cinema room.
Our clients wanted to make better use of the space, creating a substantial library for books and display while incorporating useful concealed storage below.
With the wall spanning almost the full width of the room, the design needed to make the most of the available space without overwhelming the room. A rolling ladder was also incorporated to provide practical access to the higher shelves.
The result needed to feel like an integral part of the room rather than simply a piece of furniture fitted against one wall.

From concept...
Every project begins with understanding the space and developing a design around the way it will be used.
The initial elevation explored the proportions and rhythm of the cabinetry, with five main shelving sections, a row of smaller upper compartments and a continuous run of cupboards below.
...to design
The design was then developed into a 3D render, allowing the overall proportions, shelving arrangement and rolling ladder to be considered within the room before manufacture began.
This stage was particularly important in ensuring that the library felt balanced within the architecture of the space, while still providing the generous storage our clients required.

Made in Our Workshop
Once the design was finalised, the library was manufactured in our workshop.
The substantial run of cabinetry was constructed in sections, allowing each component to be carefully made and prepared before being transported to site.
The workshop stage is where the details of the design begin to come together — from the individual shelving sections and cupboard doors through to the framework that would ultimately form the finished library.
Installation
The individual sections were carefully installed within the room, working around the existing architecture and ceiling line.
At this stage, the scale of the finished piece really began to become apparent.
With the cabinetry in position, the shelving, lower cupboards and upper storage could all be aligned and finished as one cohesive piece.
Although much of this construction work disappears once the project is complete, it is an important part of creating cabinetry that feels as though it belongs to the room.

The Ladder
One of the defining features of the library is its solid-oak rolling ladder.
Rather than treating the ladder as an additional accessory, it was incorporated into the design from the outset. Its proportions were developed specifically for the height and width of the library, allowing it to move easily across the full run of shelving.
The natural oak provides a warm contrast against the deep blue cabinetry, while the dark metal rail and fittings complement the room and give the ladder a strong architectural quality.
The Details
The finishing details were kept considered and understated.
The lower cupboards feature framed doors with tactile brass hardware, adding a subtle contrast to the deep blue finish of the cabinetry.
Throughout the piece, the detailing was designed to feel cohesive with the room, allowing the library to have a strong presence without competing with the cinema itself.

The Finished Project
What began as a blank, underused wall has been transformed into a substantial bespoke library and a defining feature of the cinema room.
The combination of deep blue cabinetry, natural oak and brass detailing creates a rich, timeless feel, while the mix of open shelving and concealed storage provides the practical functionality our clients were looking for.
The finished library is a great example of what bespoke furniture can achieve when it is designed around the architecture of a space — making use of every available inch while creating something that feels entirely unique to the room.
